The burn off, step by step
- Unbox it fully. Check the basket, the drawer, the back and underneath for protective film. Manufacturers put clear plastic in places you would not expect, and film left on a hot surface is the worst smell of the lot.
- Wash the basket and crisper plate in warm soapy water. That removes most of the surface residue before it ever gets hot.
- Dry everything properly and put it back together.
- Open a window or switch the extractor on.
- Run it empty at 200C for 15 to 20 minutes. Light smoke and a sharp smell during this is the point of the exercise.
- Let it cool, then wipe the inside with a damp cloth.
- Repeat once if it still smells strongly.

Some people cook something robust and cheap as a first meal, on the theory that it masks anything left. Chips or bacon work for that. Do it after the empty burn off rather than instead of it.

Does it happen with every machine
